Michelle Bowden presenting at Million Dollar Round Table 2022. Keynote is How Persuasion Smart are YOU?

Why your persuasion isn’t working and what to do about it.

This is an article called, Why your persuasion isn’t working and what to do about it.

Many professionals assume they’re persuasive because they know their stuff, they speak with confidence, and they care deeply about the outcome. Well here’s the truth: if you’re not tailoring your communication to match how other people like to be persuaded, you’re leaving opportunities on the table.

That’s because there isn’t just one way to persuade – there are four ways to persuade.

Through decades of research and training thousands of professionals, I’ve identified four distinct persuasive types. And here’s the kicker: most people need a combination of two or more of these styles before they’ll say “yes” to you.

Meet the birds of persuasion

🦉 The Wise Owl – These people love logic, detail, structure, and data. You’ll lose them if you don’t have the facts.

🦅 The Commanding Eagle – These decision-makers want to know you’re credible, in control, and focused on results. You’ll lose them if you’re not trustworthy.

🐦 The Friendly Budgie – They need to feel like you genuinely care about them. Connection and warmth matter most here. You’ll lose them without a spirit of goodwill.

🦚 The Captivating Peacock – This type wants energy, stories, inspiration, and emotional resonance. You’ll lose them if you don’t show your energy and enthusiasm.

We all have a preference for one, two, sometimes even three of these types and that’s how we generally persuade others – in the way we would like to be persuaded. Then we wonder why our brilliant message isn’t landing.

The hilarious thing here is that you’re not trying to persuade yourself! You’re trying to persuade the other person – so you need to work out their preferred style. In fact, if you want to be truly persuasive in meetings, pitches, interviews, or presentations, you must learn to speak all four languages. And preferably without thinking!

Case study: From slumping sales to top achiever

A few months ago, I was invited to speak at a national sales conference for a large financial services company. One of the attendees, a senior BDM, had always been a top performer. Unfortunately in recent months, something wasn’t clicking. Her confidence was slipping. Her targets were getting harder to hit. She felt like she was saying all the right things … just not getting the results.

Everyone completes my Persuasion Smart Profile (to assess their persuasion strengths and weaknesses) before attending. And as a parting gift, the organiser of the conference gave every delegate a copy of my best-selling book How to Persuade: the skills you need to get what you want). In my keynote, I introduced the Four Persuasive Types. For this BDM, it was a revelation!

She contacted me afterwards and explained that she realised she’d been “selling like an Eagle” – confident, results-driven, and determined. She was telling her client all about the incredible success of her global company (with the accompanying corporate deck) with eloquence.

If you’ve ever been on the end of one of these sales pitches where the sales person tells you all about themself with little reference to you and your needs you know what I’m going to say next don’t you?

She was completely missing the needs of the Owls (who wanted more data on business results), the Budgies (who needed more personal connection), and the Peacocks (who were craving energy and inspiration).

She amended her approach. She included a logical presentation structure that started with her understanding of their needs, what the issues were, how they could solve them together and then concluded with a meaty Q&A where the client could verify the data that was shared – for the Owls. She added personal references, connected using direct eye contact and people’s names and showed genuine concern for the client’s issues – for the Budgies. And of course she also used expressive body language, vocal variety and real storytelling – for the Peacocks.

And it changed everything!

By the end of that sales year, she was holidaying in Bali in the High Achievers Club.

The bottom line?

If you want to influence more people more often, you must go beyond your natural style and stretch into the others. That’s what I teach in my keynotes, masterclasses and books. Because when you understand how different people need to be persuaded, you become unstoppable. Remember, if you want to be truly persuasive in meetings, pitches, interviews, or presentations, you must learn to speak all four languages. And preferably without thinking!
