Success Story – Susan Brandt

Susan thrives in her dual roles as a full-time teacher and part-time lecturer.  Beyond the classroom, she serves as Secretary for the Home Economics Institute of Australia and Chairperson for its South Australia chapter, enriching the community with her expertise.

"Michelle's methods have been transformative for me as a teacher. She taught me how to analyse topics, design impactful material, and change student behaviour. After a recent conference presentation the compliments came in a steady stream over 3 days! I am so glad I attended Michelle's masterclass because she really gave me really good direction on what and how I must plan and rehearse! Michelle, thank you so much for your valuable input."

What kind of presenting do you do at work?

As a high school teacher and tertiary level lecturer, I often present to young minds. Inspired by Michelle’s best-selling book called, How to Present: the ultimate guide to presenting live and online (Wiley) I joined her masterclass to enhance my persuasive skills, aiming to shape students into better global citizens.

In what specific ways have your presentation skills improved since learning with Michelle?

– Michelle’s tips on effective message delivery have been invaluable.

I’ve learned to maintain proper eye contact, optimise room arrangement, and improve my body language for greater impact.

– Crucially, I’ve learned to shift the presentation’s focus from PowerPoint to myself, making it more engaging.

– At a recent professional development day for the Home Economics Institute of South Australia, where I serve as chairperson, I applied Michelle’s Persuasion Blueprint. The result was remarkable; delegates were engaged, and one attendee expressed how my pacing and leading resonated with her.

– My presentation skills have significantly improved. I’m now more confident presenting without relying heavily on PowerPoint, focusing on eye contact and using the 4MAT tool.

What were your top three take-aways from Michelle’s masterclass?

– The top takeaways from the course include always planning with the audience in mind.

– Understanding the three phases of a presentation: analysis, design and delivery and using them every time.

– Addressing the diverse questions of audience members. You can plan for this in advance and make it an exciting part of your presentation.

The continuous improvement (over the last few months) in my skills is a testament to the effectiveness of Michelle’s teachings.
