How to choose a speaker for your 2026 kick-off

How to choose a speaker for your 2026 kick-off (if you haven’t had time yet)

If your 2026 kick-off is creeping up and you still haven’t locked in your speaker you’re probably at the “make a smart decision fast” stage. Most speakers log off around December to get a very well-earned rest before conference season starts again mid- January.

Here’s the truth: the right keynote speaker doesn’t just entertain your people for 45 minutes. They set the emotional tone of the year, create shared language, and spark behaviour change that shows up in performance long after the applause.

1) Start with the outcome (not the topic)

Before you browse endless reels, answer one question: What do you want people to do differently the week after the kick-off and for the remaining 12 months of your year?

Examples:

  • Stronger leadership communication
  • Better manage objections around price
  • Move sales faster through the sales funnel
  • Close more deals
  • More confident client conversations
  • Better cross-team collaboration
  • A reset in energy, accountability, and momentum
  • Improved engagement scores

A speaker should be able to state – clearly – how their keynote supports that outcome and what tools your people will leave with. And yes, ideally a past client can also provide a testimonial that this is the truth of the matter!

2) Choose “energy + substance” (not one or the other)

Your kick-off audience doesn’t need a sugar hit.

They need a lift and practical strategies they can apply immediately.

The most memorable keynotes combine story, structure and strategy – people laugh, reflect, and then actually change what they do.

3) Watch the audience, not just the speaker

Here’s a shortcut I recommend to every organiser: don’t just watch a sizzle reel (all speakers look great in their reels).

Look for footage where you can see the audience – are they leaning in, laughing, participating, engaged?

You can see proof in this recent image of me working with a Google audience in December 2025.

If the room is flat, the best script in the world won’t save it. And from an adult learning point of view – if the room is flat they won’t embed the learning or implement it – it’s a waste of everyone’s time and money.

4) Ask: “Will you tailor this to us?”

A great keynote should fit your theme, culture, and current challenges.

Tailoring doesn’t mean the speaker plastered your logo on their standard slides; it means they understand your business objectives and use relevant examples, language your people recognise, and they address the real friction points inside your business.

The best speakers collaborate with you, so the keynote reinforces your strategy, not just the vibe.

5) Know what you’re buying: keynote vs training

If you need a high-impact moment that energises, aligns, and shifts mindsets quickly, you’re buying a keynote.

If you need deep skill development over time, that’s training.

Some speakers like me will blend inspiration with practical techniques – which is exactly what you want for a kick-off where you need motivation and momentum.

6) Use this “fast decision” checklist

When you speak to a short list of keynote speakers for hire, ask:

  • What will my audience be able to do after your session?
  • How do you keep people engaged (interaction, practice, humour)?
  • What do you need from us to tailor it properly?
  • What does success look like 30 days later?

7) If diversity matters (it should), be intentional

Many organisers specifically seek women keynote speakers to bring a fresh, authentic voice and perspective to the stage – especially for leadership, persuasion, communication, and culture themes.

And if you’re looking locally, make your search tight and relevant: a Keynote Speaker Sydney who is evidence-based, highly interactive, and focused on real outcomes can make your 2026 kick-off truly unforgettable. You can also start by browsing women keynote speakers or simply explore keynote speakers for hire and use the checklist above to choose quickly – with confidence.
