Daniel Ashton is a proud Worimi man, employed as an Aboriginal Population Health Trainee currently working in the North Coast Public Health Unit. In this role Daniel supports the delivery of healthy lifestyle programs, identifies the impact of disease, assists in public health response and advocates for health equality.
Here’s what Daniel said after attending Michelle’s Persuasive Presentation Skills Masterclass in 2022:
What kind of presenting do you do at work?
I present at conferences, education sessions for health workers. I pitch program proposals and I lead consultation groups and committees.
What prompted you to study with Michelle?
The Ministry of Health Centre for Epidemiology and Evidence highly recommended the training, personally I felt it’s an area that required improvement too.
How did Michelle’s teaching change your attitude to presenting in business?
I’m now always clear about my intended outcome when I go into a meeting. Michelle encouraged me to consider the audience perspective, acknowledge the barriers or objections they might have to my messages, and be specific with the solutions to their objections.
In general, what positive outcomes have you achieved from improving your presentation skills?
I now have the confidence to present at events like the 2022 Public Health Congress, stand up and speak my mind with executives and advocate for what I believe in. Recently, I very proudly accepted an executive role in the Tweed Heads branch of Can Assist (A charity that financially supports families who are navigating cancer treatment). Michelle taught me to present and extend my self with confidence and now my audiences and I are all reaping the benefits.
In what specific ways have your presentation skills improved since learning with Michelle?
I’m able to speak confidently with pride, passion, and purpose.
What were your top three take-aways from Michelle’s masterclass?
1. Diaphragmatic breath with lots of pausing or effect.
2. I use direct, connected eye contact in the star pattern to ensure I connect with my audience.
3. I use the formulas Michelle showed us to make sure that I guide question time effectively, and at the right time.
