10.Don’t use words that damage your goodwill

We covered direct, connected eye contact – ‘whites of the eyes’ to build rapport.

The key is to connect with the other person through the eyes. Just be careful when giving eye contact — don’t over-focus with crazy eyes!

The distinction here is to look right at the person and really see them. Aim to look into the white part of their eye — in this way, you won’t stare in a crazy way and make everyone uncomfortable. And be sure to look away every now and then to give you and them a break. Letting your eyes wander, looking from left to right and back again over and over, or not really letting your gaze settle on the other person is called ‘shifty eyes’ — and no-one is persuaded by someone who has shifty eyes. So find a good balance between looking people in the eye and breaking eye contact once and a while.

When you master the art of direct, connected eye contact, you’ll build stronger rapport and improve your persuasiveness. If you don’t connect in this way with others, creating goodwill and being persuasive is going to be very difficult.
